The Truth Behind Using CBD Oil For Sleep

Studies of CBD and Sleeping Patterns
Immediately below, we’ll explain the four studies in complete detail. First, we will quote the results or the professional conclusion of the study and then we will follow up with our own explanation.
Medical Study #1

Cannabidiol Life Explanation: As you can see right off the bat, the CBD administration in rats during the day or “lights on” period, actually promotes wakefulness. Not sleepiness or drowsiness that is experienced with sleeping pills. However, we’d like to point out that only 10 or 20 micrograms were administered to the rats during these tests. Remember this fact! It’s important in our conclusion and theory at the end.
Medical Study #2
“The systemic acute administration of CBD appears to increase total sleep time, in addition to increasing sleep latency in the light period of the day of administration.” – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23343597
Cannabidiol Life Explanation: The results of this study showed a correlation between CBD and increased sleep time. Additionally, like the previous study above, it established that the rats that received a dose of Cannabidiol were less likely to sleep during the day. Remember when we said to remember the amount of CBD given to the rats in study #1? Well, here’s where it get’s interesting… The importance of the amounts slipped by us at first, but we caught it (and we’re so glad we did).
“During the light period of the test day, the total percentage of sleep significantly increased in the groups treated with 10 and 40 mg/kg of CBD compared to placebo… There was an increase in the time of SWS in the group treated with CBD 40 mg/kg.
SWS means, “slow wave sleep”, which is known as, “Deep Sleep”. So, what does this tell us? Well, if study #1 only gave the rats 10-20 MICROGRAMS, which resulted in induced awakeness and study #2 resulted in a significant increase of sleep in the groups of rats treated with 10 and 40 MILLIGRAMS, with a stronger increase of SWS (deep sleep) for the rats that took 40 milligrams, we can only assume that higher amounts of CBD is what is needed to actually reach the potential of using CBD as a night time sleep aid. *This is our theory, which we base on the studies above. It is not a medical fact.*
Medical Study #3
“In conclusion, we found that CBD modulates waking via activation of neurons in the hypothalamus and DRD. Both regions are apparently involved in the generation of alertness… Since CBD induces alertness, it might be of therapeutic value in sleep disorders such as excessive somnolence.” – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16844117
Cannabidiol Life Explanation: Just so we are all clear here, the sleep disorder mentioned above (somnolence), is a medical term used to describe a state of constant and strong desire for sleep. It’s also a disorder for when a person regularly sleeps for unusually long periods of time. Therefore, according to this study, CBD is showing that it is a potential therapeutic use to avoid “sleepiness” or “drowsiness”. Only 10 micrograms were given to the rats. We’d like to point out again, only 10 micrograms were given to the rats.
Medical Study #4
“demonstrate marked improvement in subjective sleep parameters in patients with a wide variety of pain conditions including multiple sclerosis, peripheral neuropathic pain, intractable cancer pain, and rheumatoid arthritis, with an acceptable adverse event profile.” – https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17712817
Cannabidiol Life Explanation: This was a study done on patients that were suffering from some sort of chronic pain with the intention of finding out whether or not CBD could help these patients obtain a better overall sleep. As you can see from the conclusion above, if a person or patient is suffering from some sort of pain and is having trouble sleeping because of it, CBD showed improvement in their sleep parameters.

Our Final Thoughts on CBD as a Sleeping Aid
Based on everything shared throughout this article, we can only hope for more and more tests to be carried out. CBD oil is showing its amazing potential for so many conditions and we’d love for sleep to be one of them. Based on the studies above, cannabidiol is showing positive results in its role of increasing sleep time as well as alertness and we are so grateful CBD is no longer living in the shadows of THC.
With that said, these studies have led us to assume (not a medical fact) that smaller sized dosages of CBD should be taken during the day, this will induce awakeness or alertness, which we think is phenomenal! But, as bed time begins to approach and a sleep aid is needed, it might be a good idea to take stronger doses of CBD. This may actually help a person achieve a deeper, “SWS” type sleep. Especially, if they are suffering from some sort of pain (Study #4).
