CBD For Neuropathic Pain
Neuropathic pain typically refers to pain that is caused by an injury or severe condition involving nerve damage. When an individual experiences pain, the signal is usually validated by specialized endings of the nerves after sensing something wrong in the body. These signals are delivered to the brain and the spinal cord. When a person experiences neuropathic pain, the brain receives faulty signals because the nerves are injured or damaged. Thus, the false signals may tell the brain that the body is experiencing pain when there is actually no reason for the pain. Common neuropathic pain causes include diabetes, multiple sclerosis, chemotherapy, HIV & AIDS, severe infections, alcoholism, sciatica, shingles, facial nerve issues, spine surgery, as well as hip, leg, and back problems.
How CBD Could Potentially Relieve Neuropathic Pain
Several studies have shown that CBD can be used to ease the neuropathic pain. For instance, research by Toth et al. established that CBD reduces proteins that would trigger damage to the nerves in diabetic mice. The same study found that CBD vapor prevented microglia cells growth. These cells are involved in diabetic neuropathy. Additionally, the researchers established that CBD lowered pain levels for the subject mice.
Hoggart et al. conducted another investigation to establish the potential use of CBD in relieving pain. The study involved 234 people that were suffering from peripheral neuropathic pain. According to this study, mean participants reported decreased pain levels after taking CBD for 38 weeks. Over half of the subjects reported 30% reduction in their pain. Although caution should be taken when it comes to generalizing the results of these studies, the findings suggest the possibility of using CBD as a therapeutic aid for neuropathic pain.
Benefits of CBD For Neuropathic Pain
Apart from the pain that sufferers experience, conventional therapeutic aids for this condition cause other problems. Currently, therapeutic aids for neuropathic pain include anti-depressants, opioid painkillers, and anti-inflammatory drugs, among other powerful drugs. Unfortunately, these medications are not effective in the therapeutic aid of this condition in most patients. Additionally, they expose patients to the risks of addiction, physical dependence, and other negative side effects. CBD however, does not cause any of these problems or have negative side effects. This makes CBD preferable for many neuropathic pain sufferers.
